What Shade of Green Are You?

March 4, 2010 at 7:11 pm (Design, Eco-Friendliness) (, , , , , , )

As Earth keeps on turning, more and more people are becoming eco-conscious, or at least aware of it. Some people will laugh and say ‘too late for that’, maybe it is? But we won’t know until we try.

I think in a lot of cases, people just don’t know where to begin. I can say that for me. There are the obvious acts like turning off your pc, tv, lights, separating trash so plastic can be recycled. But that just doesn’t feel like enough. Sure, on a scale of 6 billion, yes, but that isn’t the case.

Anyways, so I when I decided I wanted to be in design, I knew I wanted to be an eco-friendly designer. What? How? Pffft. It’s simple things like choosing to print on recycled non-toxic renewable materials, choosing only to print when necessary – email is proving more efficient anyway, using as little packaging as possible… and it doesn’t end there. Practicing green design conserves natural resources, reduces energy consumption, cuts solid waste and I believe it is the first step towards changing the environment around me.

Some things you may be interested in practicing to be eco-friendly :

  • Separating recyclables
  • Re-use anything that you can
  • Keeping the thermostat at a reasonable level
  • Drinking from a glass, not plastic or styrofoam cups
  • Not using running water to clean dishes, fill up the sink
  • Turn off appliances by the plug when not in use
  • Use the material shopping bags – they are GREEN
  • Try not to drive to the shop twice a day, think ahead, save petrol
  • Use compact flourescent light bulbs
  • Buy energy-efficient products
  • Eat local food not imported food (it’s better for you anyway)
  • And if you’re feeling really green, plant a tree!

These are a few changes that we could all implement. It might seem like a mission, but once the habit is there, you’re set.

Encourage others to conserve, we could be the change that saves the world.
